My husband and I were working on a retro-style platform Peace Walker fangame. But even non-commercial fangames can get one into trouble so we decided to stop. Sorry. I don't have the heart to take down this blog. If you'd like the sprites for your own non-commercial stuff, let me know!

You can cook rations on a rotating spit, sitting next to a sentient cat during a major boss fight.
If you jump off a roof and into a specific bale of hay, it plays an unnecessarily dramatic slow motion animation.
There’s a gun that has a 1/3 chance to shoot an actual tornado. You can catch people in the tornado and watch them as they spin. This is never thought of as impossible or supernatural by anybody in-game.
Your R&D deam can develop doritos, mountain dew, and AXE bodyspray. You can also wear shirts with their logos on it.
“A CARDBOARD TANK? KAZ, THATS BRILLIANT!!”
“Meow? MEOW? Meow meow meow!”
Big Boss sleep talks about dinosaurs and believes wholeheartedly in santa claus. He’s 39.
Kaz has an obsession with the sound of train engines. It borders on something sexual. It’s mentioned once offhand and never brought up again in canon.
“Just out of curiosity, do ghosts have legs or what?”
“Alright! No more uniforms!! From now on, we’re all going NAKED!!”
Big Boss can lift a tank with his bare hands. You just have to mash a button hard enough. This absurd feat of strength is never brought up again in canon.
The final boss theme is a J-pop song.
You can wear nothing but swim trunks throughout the entire game if you want to.
You can wear a shirt that says BIG BOSS with an arrow pointing downward.
The CIA director’s name is Hot Coldsman.
“Cecile Cosima Caminades? You know, if you say part of that in Japanese, it sounds like “Kojima kamina desu”…I can’t believe it!! Do you know what that means?? KOJIMA IS GOD!!”
Here’s my submission to the 2017 MGS Secret Santa! Final Boss fight, Disney-style. Boop. (@kaxuhira) I’ve seen some really awesome MGS art so I’m a bit self-conscious.
I drew this silly sketch last spring, and it's been hanging on our refrigerator for months. Don't be jealous Kaz & Ocelot. Snake needs petting just as much as you do!
Damn, well good luck to you guys
Thanks, and sorry about the hype that ended in vaporware.
So sorry to hear that. I kept seeing you guys and your work and I was super excited since PW is my fav mgs game. But I think it was a good run while it lasted, and props to you guys for putting your heart and soul into it, and I say it's really appreciated. Hopefully you guys make a new game, but who knows.
Thanks. I really appreciate it. We’re definitely making a game. We’ll be using the engine and most of the assets, but it’s kind of hard for me personally to move forward right this second. We had a story to tell with Peace Day and I’m not giving up on that just yet. I have all these animation resources...I’ll do something that’s not within the apparently volatile medium that is a fangame.
Hey, I just saw your post about PeaceDay and I'm really sorry to see that the game isn't going to get made. If you don't mind me asking, were you actually approached with a C&D or are you just trying to avoid that situation? I'm in the middle of a lot of fanworks myself and I just want to know how cautious I should be.
I wasn’t approached, but a bunch of friends sent me messages informing me that these types of things have happened. There was an AMA with some copyright lawyer on Reddit that specifically said that people who get sued over fangames often get an NDA and can’t talk about it after the settlement. Then there were the 500 or so fangames taken down by Nintendo from GameBolt (I think that’s the name of the site). Then there was the one piece of fan art that Kojima tweeted about and immediately got DMCA’ed by Konami. Putting together the pieces I just feel like that’s enough of a warning for me to stay away. According to the copyright lawyer on Reddit, “You cannot afford fair use.”Personally I don’t think you have to worry about fan art or video or fanfiction. It’s games specifically - possibly because they’re a medium in direct competition that seem to be the trouble. I don’t know a whole lot about it beyond that. I’m just playing it somewhat safer than I normally would with stuff like this because Konami has a reputation for being pretty awful.I appreciate the message.
I have some really bad news about our MGS fangame, Peace Day. It’s not happening. Not anymore. We put in 4 months of work into it, making the sprites and interactions and a physics engine. Backgrounds and storyboards and all kinds of fun stuff. But we were working under the misleading concept of fair use. You guys have been awesome support on our project and some of the sweetest people we’ve ever talked to. This whole game was meant to be a love letter to the MGS:PW fandom. I’m devastated that we can’t make it work, and that we created a shitload of vaporware. If anyone wants the sprites for their own personal (noncommercial) use, they’re welcome to them. We were so dumb. Even the most basic research would have turned up that despite the fair use clause being a real thing, you can still get sued - or at the very least, have your stuff DMCA’ed. You can defend yourself in court, but the question is, do you have the cash for that kind of legal defense? Not all companies do this. Sega and Valve have given people permission to make fangames, and so has the creator of Undertale. But there’s something about fangames - not fan art - that makes companies like Konami and Nintendo go nuclear. Even if you’re not making money off of them. Even if you’re not using any in-game assets. Even if you’re just representing their characters and bits of story. They will sue you and then slap you with an NDA so you can’t ever talk about it. Maybe Glowdust and I are taking the cowardly way out. But I’m not about to spend another 3-6 months of my life creating something only to risk being sued, or to have my work buried in the ground forever. We’ll be making an original game that uses all the lessons we’ve learned in the last few months instead. And I’m so, so sorry. :-( https://www.reddit.com/r/gamedev/comments/5pxldd/ultimate_as_promised_guide_to_legal_needs_and/ http://kotaku.com/5420240/how-to-make-a-fan-game-and-not-get-your-ass-sued http://www.wired.co.uk/article/investigation-are-fan-games-legal
You’ll be able to ride the kidnapper drones in our game. I think we might even have a whole level based on just that, because the bridge will be out or something. Sorry for the tiny, grainy gif, it’s all I could get Tumblr to digest.
Just a gif of Snake destroying a kidnapper in our game (in debug mode). Sorry for the grain, Tumblr only allows pathetically small gifs!
Yayyyy we can has weapons! Hello Kitty AK-47, a gatling gun, a rocket launcher, and a tranq gun! Also we have friendly kidnappers that don’t mind being taken for a ride, and boxes that can now take damage. There’s still loads of bugs. Rockets don’t deal damage quite yet, because that’s been useful for debugging. If you step on a tranq dart the whole thing crashes. But holy moly this is actually happening!
Strangelove walking animation! (Weapon animations and all that fun explodey stuff with actual gameplay coming real soon!) (This is all for our MGS:PW fangame, Peace Day)
Kaz running sprite, with his hair gloriously flowing in the wind. I bet his souffle is on fire or something. We’re in the thick of it and there hasn’t been any show-worthy progress for some time - fine-tuning gun animations, enemy sprites, other disjointed pieces. But it’s all starting to come together. Just in case you’re wondering what this is, we’re making a retroplatformer fangame called Peace Day!
Loading screen design - Snake and Kaz discussing something on the way to the next mission. Probably something different before each one. What do you think they should talk about? This is for our Peace Walker fangame, Peace Day.
This isn’t related to progress on the game, but I made this a while back because Pacifica ruins EVERYTHING! (Now I crawl back into my hole to work on gun sprites and enemy animation so I can make a proper game update)
Few things in our game will ever be this glitchy again, so we have to savor these moments as they come. I do think we’ll keep the banana gun, complete with non-lethal banana bullets.
This is the debug space for our retro MGS fangame Peace Day. It doesn’t look like much right now because we don’t have enemies or any real gameplay yet - but we have PHYSICS! One way platforms and stuff like that! Plus, just about all the basic movement mechanics are done. Finally, we can move on to more exciting things besides the solid foundations of the game. (Disclaimer: I’m aware that some of the movement still looks a bit funky and we’re working on that. But you get it. It basically works!!!)
Oblivious guard (and an actual guard tower!) Both Glowdust and I got really sick this week and couldn’t work on the game too much. :-( And the stuff that we did accomplish is all unfulfilling back-end stuff like smoother flow, one-way platform physics, and a lot of animation that isn’t quite done yet. I want to get more stuff done, but I’m just feeling a bit ~blergh~ still.
Took a couple of evenings to get this CQC combo animation done. I felt pretty bad for the guard the entire time I was drawing this. Can’t say I really enjoyed making this animation, even though Snake was looking pretty fierce. But one of the things that I liked about PW and especially TPP is that the enemy soldiers are just human beings who get scared and show concern for each other, unlike faceless enemies in other games. It’s definitely a quality we’ll have in Peace Day as well.
Today I made the animation for kidnapper drones that can capture Snake! In the game you’ll have to escape before they fly too high up and cause you to get injured or even die when you finally get free. The physics of the animation will probably be a lot smoother in-game, but I won’t know that until Glowdust programs it in. He’s working so hard on that awesome physics engine! (I had a bit too much fun drawing the first annoyed and then horrified expressions in this sprite)
I was trying to make a decent “idle” animation since we were missing one. Glowdust said that Snake needs to fidget a little bit, shifting from foot to foot. Well, I did it and THIS happened. It’s officially going to be an in-game sprite now (for our fangame, Peace Day).
Animation for fultoning prisoners for our MGS fangame Peace Day - this one looks suspiciously like Chico. That boy’s always getting into trouble.
Today I made some of the animations for Snake holding a pistol for our Peace Day retro-game fanfic. The pistol sprites could be changed out. Fun and tricky!
Snake ledge scramble sprites for the 8-bittish fanfic game Peace Day.
(Can’t get the damn gifs to play so I’m using video!) Game Debug Mode! Glowdust just put in the new (larger) background, which caused the mines to end up in the air. This happens on startup now!
Snake: “Shit-shit-shit-WTF seriously?!”
I know Snake’s just running back and forth and it looks boring, but I’m kind of proud of this tree, and the skid-out animation as he changes direction, both of which I did today. Hopefully we’ll be able to get some actual gameplay capture gifs going soon, because Photoshop is kind of a PIA for showing off the animation in a real environment. Things are still a bit glitchy on that end right now!

Just the most basic level possible to test out the platforms and sprites, and some backgrounds. We know Mother Base is supposed to be hexagonal, but that geometry is way too complicated to depict in a 2D 8-bit-ish environment! There will most definitely be a Hello Kitty AK-47. After all, this is 1974 and that’s about the time when Hello Kitty first appeared.
Not a screenshot, but an arrangement of some of the backgrounds and sprites for an 8-bittish Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker fan fiction game Glowdust and I are working on. Yerba mate is a wonderful thing!
