Come on, I'll walk you home.
i don’t know if anyone else has this uploaded so here you go. enstars anime, ep 11 (?) rei and tsumugi’s interaction. “You can do it if you try.”
(yes i have the fountain one too)
Their shared struggle with a lack of/weirdness towards their own humanity and lack of care for their lives and need to sacrifice themselves 👍how tsumugi treats him normally despite thinking he's extraordinary and having admiration towards him and a severe lack of empathy and then helps lead this campaign of dehumanization against him for the greater good and rei takes it due to his martyr complex. He emphathized with eichi so much he let it happen. and he has the audacity to critique tsumugi for some things that he had thought about in regards to himself. How were they so close but out of reach from each other but still genuinely truly friends? At what point did reis amusement and weird interest towards him grow into genuine true care despite it still being there because to be fair tsumugi is a weird little freak, but also, rei taught him so much and treated him like a human being when he saw himself as lower than that? He was there on the day he saw proof of his newly found humanity, of his rebirth thanks to natsume and the war, congratulating him for it. Even after all this time he finds himself slipping into his old tone with him, the tone of a self he has long killed off. And now theyre friends again even though the scars remain, even though it's tsumugi's torturous punishment, rei takes care of him. says they could take over the world together. Still wants him to be just a little kinder to himself, just as he'd wished for before. Not to mention the thing rei had implied about his own family when eichi asked if he was bullied, too, while being painfully aware of tsumugi's family and how awful it was...? 2nd year tsumugi saying he grew attached to him after only talking a few times because his concern made him genuinely, truly happy and rei saying he couldnt leave him alone and that he shouldnt act so distant. That theyre friends if he wants him to be. Teaching him what, in his perspective, friendship is, because tsumugis view of it is so skewed he doesnt even know when he has permission to consider someone his friend, and he has so many connections yet hes so alone. this isn't even all but I shant I cant and I shant.
So I'm replaying Ray's After ending rn, and it got me thinking that what I adore so much about Rika as an antagonist is just how damn scary she can be. I always found those who cause harm with good intentions (at least in their point of view) much scarier than those who hurt you with pure intention on hurting you. I think the best example of it is this CG in particular:
Look at that. Such a loving, gentle expression on her face. Probably kissing his forehead. Because she loves him. Heck, without any context, this CG looks even sweet, if you think about it. And yet, all that is while Saeyoung is forcefully sedated on a powerful concoction of drugs even a trained agent like him can't do anything about (and Saeyoung WAS definitely trained to deal with this sort of thing, hence it's mentioned that this is a 'special' kind of drugs). He looks miserable. Bags under his eyes, his expression pained and troubled, even his hair is paler than usual. All that as a direct result of her actions. But she's utterly blind to it. What's scarier, is that she knowingly shuts off her understanding of what's really happening. She's not oblivious to it at all. She just chooses not to see it that way. Simply because she doesn't want to.
Rika is the type of antagonist that will cup your cheek into her warm hand with the most loving of smiles on her face, all while you are getting elixir poured down your throat. Even whispering to you that you're doing great, that the pain will soon pass, and that she can't wait to see you reach the happiness she knows you deserve. I won't be surprised if she even cried genuine tears of compassion during some ceremonies for her believers. All while being the sole reason behind their suffering.
And that's... God, that's terrifying to me. I love that about her.
Rika Kim, they could never make me hate you
oh yeah yuri
It was almost exactly 10 years ago when I first came across this official Dir en grey manga. Back then I was full of hope that someone would one day translate this fierce piece of art for everyone. Turns out no one ever did. And I can’t really blame anyone, because the scans are tiny, the kana are even tinier and the character page is one blurry mess. Who, in their right mind, would do this to themself?! Well… I did. Because today my Japanese is finally good enough that I could translate this.
So here it is. Dir en grey’s Deadly Claris manga, book #1. (I have never seen the other ones and I am pretty sure they don’t exist; haha.) I genuinely hope you’ll enjoy reading it! <3
Book: Deadly Claris 1 Written by: Satou Yoshinawo || Drawn by: DADA Published: July 2003 Pages: 129
Notes: ● There are a few references to Dir en grey songs in this. The Demon Kingdom is actually the well-known “Rasetsu Koku”. (More accurately “Rasetsu” stands for “Rakshasa”; a man-eating demon in Hinduism and Buddhism.) Kaoru’s special attack is called Sin & Punishment - “Tsumi to Batsu”. And Kyo used the Blue Moon incantation - “Aoi Tsuki”. ● I’ve resized the pictures from 450px to 500px wide. ● I’ve included all the SFX, because I am out of my mind obviously. ● You do not necessarily have to know the band to read and enjoy this manga; tbh. Give it a try! The art is insane! (Scanlation & optional download link below.)
