I Would Literally Do Anything To Re Live That Feeling I Had When I First Watched Masaan. There Is Something

I would literally do anything to re live that feeling I had when I first watched Masaan. There is something extremely raw about understanding the original dialogue & not needing subtitles.

And yet. Yet. I did not know a lot of cultural nuances within the story. Such as the belief that splitting the skull during cremation is said to help the soul rest in peace. The betting on kids who can dive to pick coins. Slut shaming & stigma on pre marital sex being more condemned in smaller towns than metropolitan cities.

The subtlety of accents. Devi uses the word "please" "papa" & always speaks in a clear "sophisticated" way, sprinkled with English words. She's digitally literate. Confident even that despite everyone's blackmail, she was just in love & not being the so called slut. She was afraid but never guilty. She never accepted harassment.

Then we have Deepak & Shaalu. Blissfully happy. Until reality starts sinking in. Their families will not accept an inter caste marriage. Deepak starts getting insecure that his family cremates bodies for a living. Shaalu feels pathetic for asking. Of course she meant no harm but damn was she scared of bring disowned.

And then it starts to merge. Devi & Deepak both want to break their cycle of poverty. They study hard & move in search of opportunity. They want to better their lives. They've lost their lovers. They both throw their lover's remaining token into the rivers.

I personally see the last line to be layered. That they should go to sangam twice. But were they really alone? Or were they going with that someone not next to them but in their heart?

Puen & Talay falling for each other & not at the same time is so bittersweet.

They've practically grown attached to the person they don't entirely know even after a year together.

Puen knows Talay's dreams as a colorist, that he dislikes all but bacon pink. He has a sweet tooth. Plays guitar. Sings well. He's very sincere and serious when it comes to people & emotions. But he doesn't know why he gives mixed signals to his obvious flirting. Why he's so determined to push him away. He has no clue why such a ball of sunshine is cynical about love. Puen knows a lot about Talay's details like name & birthday. The fact that his entire life as "Tun" has started revolving around Talay isn't helping him at all. The possible reason he's keeping secrets I've mentioned here.

Talay can't accept a person he doesn't know. He has seen Puen be his most vulnerable self. Sure he might be confident, independent & flirty. But ultimately he's just a clingy baby around Talay. He's playful, lively. There's hardly any dull moment with him. Talay finds himself naturally drawn to him. He subconsciously observes everything this "Tun" does.

But the guessing game hurts. Sure, he's falling for "Tun" the playful, clingy & sensitive boy at his core. But how can he accept someone whose name he doesn't know. How will he find him once they go back. What will he do if they don't go back to together. If he's going to date, he's not going to waste time unless they're in it for the long run. And that also means Talay needing preparation to adjust to Puen's schedules & fame.

Communication can solve the problem. However the problem is also their fear of losing each other after initiating the difficult conversation. This is a classic trope for falling for a best friend except, they do not fall under any label at this point.

The fact that Puen still goes by "Tun" with Talay despite spending months together hints a bit of self disgust.

It's like Puen is jealous of his own success. Initially he must have been genuinely concerned about privacy. From literally the second day it's evident that Talay does not know much about films or actors. He couldn't guess his name. Even a casual fan would have guessed with those hints.

Celebrity disease is unlikely considering Puen's personality in the real world. However, Puen's actions can still be justified saying he doesn't want to be idolised.

Since the series hasn't ended, it's worth speculating if he has a suspicion if who Talay is. Here's a theory.

Think about it. He met Talay, love at first sight, not once but twice, by fate. Puen could've obtained Talay's contact from a crew member. On reaching out, he must have met Tess in Talay's body who might not have responded well. There's a chance it made him sad enough to get drunk & the next thing, he's met with an accident. But now. Now he meets Talay in the alternate world. Some dots vaguely start connecting. Now he needs to ensure his fame doesn't get in the way. He wants to see the real Talay.

Even this intention can't be justified as of ep6 considering how much they have endured together. They know each other's likes, dislikes, about Puen being done with his fame, about Talay's dreams & fears.

Puen is just fucking scared of rejection at this point & nothing else. It's been so long, revealing himself now would shake things up no matter what. So he hides behind excuses such as scriptwriting to justify his flirting. Sometimes he doesn't even give a decent answer.

It really makes me wonder if he's even interested to go back to his real life at this point. Maybe he likes to be Pakorn with loving parents & friends like Up, Aou & Talay as Tess who he can hit on without worrying about others. He now has a community of people who travelled universes. No one puts him on a pedestal.

He's terrified of his own fame. Worried that it will create distance. That Talay will stop looking at him as an equal.

He must have encountered a lot of people trying to take advantage of his status. He's probably unsure if he's indeed loveable as the whole person he truly is. He could also be afraid his celebrity status will just hurt the ones he loves if both return to the real world.

He needs to have faith in Talay's capability to love him, to accept him as a playful clingy boy who's also a public figure.

He's hidden himself for so long, grown to love Talay so much with time.... that now if Talay can't accept him as a whole.... He'll be heartbroken much more than before. And worse, Talay will be too.

Is it clear that I'm flirting with you?

Just because we have clothes on, doesn't mean we didn't have sex.

Vice Versa The series could have easily gone wrong with the cliché character tropes. Puen being the rich, famous, handsome, go-getter bad boy & Talay being a struggling professional, socially awkward, ball of sunshine who fixes the bad boy.

While the characters easily fit into the tropes, it's the little details that make them more realistic & non-stereotypical.

Puen is everything like the bad boy, except he isn't. He is polite, likeable, hard-working & overall a sweet guy. He should have slipped into a negative spiral after losing his fame overnight & turning into a struggling scriptwriter.

Ironically, it's not the success that gets to his head but the absence of it. He was probably overworked & lonely in real life. He must have had a misconception that life without fame was going to be easy. He goes haywire when he turns into Pakorn, an average boy with no eyes on him. However, he receives Talay's criticism well. He owns up to his wrongdoings & tries to fix them. He learns that this life is his chance to have all the friendships & love he yearned for, so he must handle it with care.

Talay is struggling with job interviews & awkward around new people. But he is not lonely, he has a fairly active social life. He is passionate & workaholic. He doesn't seem like a pessimist, but he doesn't seem like the eternal optimist who believes in fairytale endings either.

Talay is KNOWS the right time to have fun. Instead of living a rich spoilt brat life like Tess, he chooses to be responsible & fix the body owner's life.

He is helpful, responsible & sensitive towards others feelings. At the same time he is not the kind who will shy away from tough conversations. So even if Puen melts from seeing Talay being all goofy & child like, Talay is anything but unicorns & rainbows. Both the leads come with their own sets of strengths & weaknesses.

What is interesting about their romance is that both of them claim to have never dated. And it's surprising that Puen is the one who believes in love despite being in a position where he must have encountered people after his wealth, fame & looks. Meanwhile Talay is the cynical one.

Puen courageously opens his heart. Despite being the go-getter who flirts aggressively, he is extremely gentle. He is trying to understand Talay & help him tear down his walls instead of intruding.

On the other hand Talay is also learning that love does not feel demanding to the one who is experiencing it. He is gradually making space for Puen in his life, developing feelings & attachment while struggling to accept it.

image

Instead of healing each other, the two are embarking on a journey of understanding each other, following their hearts and coping with their own emotional baggage to prevent their insecurities hurting the other person. (Lol at least I hope so considering the progress until Ep 3 🥲🥲🥲🥲) Because we saw Talay making Puen realise that he can't escape hardwork in any life & Puen trying to make Talay come to a conclusion that love is not supposed to hurt or distract you.

Edit : guess who got clowned from ep4 🤡

So from ep4 (posting before ep5 releases) we can see that even Puen is passing off everything as "for the script" & is unwilling to take responsibility for his actions.

Meanwhile Talay likes it & hopes it was sincere. So now it's Puen who's not taking responsibility for making Talay like him.

Color symbolism of soft blush - Vice Versa Episode 3 🌸

Soft pink is often associated with feminine qualities such as nurturing and compassion. It is also symbolic of budding romance and falling in love. Which is precisely what both the boys are experiencing at this moment.

Pink also has negative connotations such as passivity and unwillingness to take matters seriously.

Puen refused to take responsibility of Pakorn's life until that eye opening conversation. On the other hand Talay is still in denial about Puen's obvious flirting.

Pink is also associated with timidity & inexperience. Both the leads claim to have never experienced dating. While Puen is letting his heart lead, Talay is acting timid & cautious, thereby caging it. He's neither taking responsibility for his own feelings nor for making Puen fall in love with him. 🥲

Why I will never get over Tian and Phupha

And no, its not because its outside the usual university/office context. (well yes it adds to the reason but hear me out).

Classic Thai BL is how a rich boy with issues meets poor boy with a big heart who gives him confidence to open his heart again. Jealous ex, old girl crush, second lead, poorly shown confusion about ones sexuality…. But this one? Almost none of it.

Well poor boy rich boy yes & no. Tian is a rich boy who is having a tough time coping with the prospect of death. He was not heartbroken from an ex…. he was genuinely frustrated from having no goals, a comfortable life with little room to aspire for more, no clue of his interests. And then he knows he might just die one day before he even gets to 30. Then one fine day Torfun’s unfortunate death saves his life. He feels burdended with guilt. A horrible guilt to live with. There was this young woman, with hopes, dreams, a desire to do good for the village kids. Because of his parents connections & wealth he not only cuts the line but also gets to prolong a life he was living aimlessly. Unhappily.

But now for the first time in his life, guilt it may be, drives him to actually do something. The near death experience pushes him to try something new & seek something in this second life that was bestowed upon him. Also notice how it’s not poor boy teaches rich boy there is so much to live for. Tian finds a reason to keep going by himself. Phupha was a sweet bonus on the side that made out worthwhile for him to stick around in a remote place (and as a city kid let me tell you living in such remote places semi permanently is hard for us. It’s a 360 degree lifestyle change)

And idk if it is Tian or Mix but he has this firm yet gentle feminine charatcter about him. He is just a little bratty with Phupa to get his attention. He doesn’t wait like the princess to be pursued, he initiates. But when hints are thrown at him he shows he picks on them and still plays just a little hard to get.

Also Phupha. Earth just does it so well as a reserved masculine lead 😂 but even then, him caring for Tian seems more of a protective instinct. It feels like at first he had this prejudice knowing who Tian is, that he wouldn’t be able to bear hardships. However at the same time he’s hit with the fact just how attractive he finds this man. Sure he must have given up on dating after being heartbroken losing his father…. But think about it. He’s near the border. Few colleagues & families in the village. There was Torfun. He knew she liked him. Although not explicit he was probably gay & could not afford to come out in such a tight knit village where many don’t understand it. They may not be homophobic, but they also may not understand what being gay is. And they keep telling him to get a “wife”. Then comes this man who is attractive, sassy AND into him? Phupha may not be this brooding masculine guy after all he might just be unaware of how to flirt confidently. Especially with a man.

Leaving aside the manufactured conflict which could’ve been done so much better…. Phupha is such a shy character. He doesn’t show much affection in public. And in Our Skyy 2 it is clear just how insecure he feels seeing Tian has moved & changed his lifestyle to suit him but he’s barely done that much of a lifestyle change for him. And the difference in social class makes it hard for him to see Tian’s parents. He must have worked so hard to get that diamond & plan the proposal w his parents🥹

And I love how genuine the ending feels. Tian gives his life abroad a chance & ultimately decides he wants to go teach in that village. Phupha knows he likes his job & sets Tian free saying he’ll wait for him but doesn’t expect him to return. It was not a real compromise on careers or dreams, but a natural draw they had towards each other & the place & its community.
