π Chapter 1
What do you think Jaehee's partner would be like? I'm writing a story for her. I already have the perfect girl for Zen, Yoonsung, Jumin, Saeyoung, and even Saeran! But it's a bit more complex for me. I don't want to make a mistake and give her a bad partner. She only deserves love after everything she's been through! I had in mind a caring woman, someone who sees the good in life without being naive and who, despite being kind, defends those she loves tooth and nail. However, I would love to kno
Listen, I think you should follow your heart when it comes to making a romantic partner for Jaehee.
I assume the reason why you're having a hard time here is because you haven't written a story about women who like other women yet, or maybe you have but you've never had a character like Jaehee to work with!
That doesn't mean you can't give it your best shot and follow your heart with what feels good! It's good to be mindful of what you're writing in general, especially if it isn't your lived experience, but if knowing that, if you don't write it, you'll never know if you can do it. Even if you make a mistake and someone points it out, that's just a learning experience and you can adjust and adapt from that point! Don't let the fear of failure hold you back if this is something you're determined to write.
When it comes to writing relationships, regardless of sexuality, the goal isn't to make a perfect partner. Nobody's perfect, and we're all bound to make a mistake, conscious or not. The important part is to be willing to own up to your mistakes and work on them. Don't aim for a reality where there's no tension! Some relationships are finely-tuned but they aren't without fault. It's not normal to fight with your partner all of the time, but it definitely isn't healthy to not have some disagreements now and again.
Because you likely won't agree on everything you do, even if you do share similar views and feelings! That doesn't mean disagreements turn into fights, though. Cool down, take time apart, and then come back with a level head if it gets bad. Know your worth, really, and be clear on what is and isn't okay. Relationships aren't a cakewalk all the time, what matters is your ability to trust and listen to your partner!
The kind of partner I envision for Jaehee is someone considerate who isn't afraid to advocate for someone they love. Jaehee's problem with advocating is that she won't consider her feelings. She thinks she has no choice but to stay in her career field because she needs money to take care of herself and to show her life means something. Her mom and dad are gone, and she has no one to turn to if something goes up in smoke. She has to be self-reliant!
Her uncle and aunt aren't going to help her in life. They did "their duty" for her by giving her the bare minimum but she knows she never wants to be indebted to them. She doesn't want to make a stink or be a nuisance. She wants to keep her head down, make a decent amount of money to take care of herself, and... well, she's never been allowed to think beyond that. She can't imagine life in passion or dreams because she's had to be practical.
Zen is her main outlet for passion. She adores him because he leapt to his dreams despite the odds stacked against him. She watches a man believe in himself and fight for what he wants because she isn't sure she could ever do the same. She plays it safe, but she can count on Zen to always be bold, driven, and honest. Jaehee lives vicariously through that part of Zen's career even though it's obvious she wishes she could be the same kind of person as Zen.
This is why Jaehee's route focuses on you being her rock! You nudge her to passion her dreams because she needs someone to tell her it isn't a bad thing to go after what she wants. It's why having her idol tell her the same thing meant so much to her arc. I know people get upset with the fact that Zen does a lot of leg work with Jaehee in this regard but I don't think people grasp how much Zen's passion means to her. Hearing your idol tell you that your dream is worth fighting for is something a lot of us could only dream of.
But, Zen affirmed she didn't have to just DREAM of being happy. She could fight for it and he would cheer for her the same way she cheers for him. Saeyoung, although doing her project wrong, fought to do it because he saw how miserable she was. He didn't just do it because he wanted to make a cat project, he did it because Jaehee is a friend and she struggles with these cat projects all the time. This is the first time she's ever done something that made her smile, why wouldn't he offer to do the morally dubious thing to help her focus on coffee?
And it's the same for MC.
You come into her world with a smile on your face and you tell her she's wonderful, talented, and deserves to have a dream of her own. Not only that, you want to be by her side and you chase after these dreams, and for someone like Jaehee who has always feared being alone at the end of the day, that rocks her world more than the love and support she received from Zen and Saeyoung. You help her feel confident enough to speak her mind.
She doesn't have to put up pretenses with you.
It's real.
And, I know people get frustrated with the fact that she sees you as a friend at first, but what is a Jaehee romance if not falling in love with your best friend? Points broadly at the Valentine's DLC where Jaehee and MC come out of the closet together, though the focus is hugely on Jaehee coming out in that moment. It's a metaphor and beautiful in its own way.
To me, romance with Jaehee is falling in love with the person who has supported you every way to Sunday.
It's realizing you love your best friend as more than just as a friend, and in that sense, her route feels the most realistic to me in terms of experience. If you're trying to make a romance with Jaehee, you don't have to write it that way, but when I write Jaehee in a romance, I see her realizing her admiration and affection for her friend is more when her heart starts to flutter after your first meeting at the party. It isn't clear at first because she's never given herself the space to feel that kind of desire.
She went on dates in college, I'm sure, but nothing more than that. Always fleeting evenings with someone pleasant but she never fell in love with them. But, she's falling in love with you, and that's sweet in every way imaginable.
"I called you a friend because I adore and admire you, but now that we've spent more time together, I realize what I felt was never quite platonic... there was always more to it, but I didn't realize it until I saw your smile and felt my knees buckle. You may love your friends dearly but I never knew what it felt like to be in love with someone until the thought of only calling you my friend made my heart... somber. I wish to be more than a friend, I wish to be your partner, and if you would... indulge me than perhaps, your girlfriend."
You inspire Jaehee to be herself, her truest self, and that's the most lovely thing of all. The difference between your main support and the support she gets from Zen and Saeyoung is simple.
She can see her happiest future with you, a wonderful life where you side stand by side every day, whereas she sees Saeyoung and Zen dropping in now and again to show their support and love for her as her friends. Same with Yoosung, and hey, when things are better with Jumin, even him! She sees you as her every day, though. She wants to spend every moment with you and that's the distinction that helps her realize her love for you is not simply platonic.
It opens a door to other desires she's had that didn't feel as outright at first. Acknowledging her heart means realizing her worth, and you helped Jaehee do that... not anyone else.
