Сесть and its many meanings

Basic verbs can be surprisingly tricky. You might think the verb садиться/сесть ("to sit down") is straightforward, but it's anything but simple. Here's a dive into its multiple meanings:

To board (a bus, train, etc.):

Мы сели в автобус - We got on the bus.

To run out of battery:

У телефона села батарейка - My phone's battery is dead.

To shrink:

У меня футболка села после стирки - My T-shirt shrunk after washing.

To get imprisoned:

Он сел на пять лет - He went to prison for five years.

But that's not all! Here are some more uses:

Be the one who makes you happy. Originally it was: "Be with the one who makes you happy", but somehow "with" (c) dimmed.

Interestingly, it works in Russian both with and without C because the instrumental case is needed either way.

Interesting facts about the Russian keyboard layout: Ф is where the English letter A is, and A is where the English letter F is. Also, S is a common plural ending in English, and Ы on the same key is the most common plural ending in Russian.

Did you have a diary when you were a kid? I cringe every time I read my old diaries. But this page collects all the weird diary entries and posts them. Not sure where they take them from, but they're all pretty hilarious.

There is a pun here, the two words sound absolutely the same: - сыт - is full. - ссыт - pisses This is what makes it very funny in Russian.

Vocabulary: сытый (short form: сыт, сыта, сыты) - to be full ссать - to piss (colloquial)

I'M BACK ALREADY because that was too good not to comment on, oh my god. That was hysterical. Anton's face when he pulled out that stick and the pie tin and realized he'd have to do something with it. These guys are so talented, I can't believe they pull the jokes out of the top of their heads. This is already one of my favorites and I can already foresee the rewatches. As a reverse learner, I could appreciate the humor so much. And that you explain the jokes to give cultural/linguistic context.

yes, this episode was freaking exellent! my favourite part is Anton's cocky face when he says 'yeah, I listen' I laughed for like 10 minutes when I saw that 🤣 by the way, it's not really a stick Anton pulled out, it's something called ве́ник (literally means 'besom' or 'bath broom') and is used for traditional sauna sessions (ба́ня). you basically whip yourself with it to help blood circulate better. sounds harsh, but it actually feels amazing, talking from experience lol.

Hey, it’s that Russian learner who sent you an ask several months ago saying I watched your clips to help me. Just wanted to drop by again and say I’m still learning Russian and your videos are still hilarious! Improvisation content... What happened?

Hey guys! The Russian Improvisation fandom recieved some bad news and good news in the span of the last 4 months, and I would like to share them with you. They are quite important. First of all, I'm sad to tell you that the original show has been permanently closed. The show has aired for 8 seasons in nearly 7 years.

The reason for the show's closure is NOT its low ratings - Improvisation has been one of the most popular TV shows on the Russian television, and the fanbase keeps growing every day. In short, TNT's management team (the channel Impro was originally aired on) went through some changes, and the new team decided Improvisation had to go (which, in everyone's opinion, makes no sense). Sure, this news is dreadful, but I think the new changes make up for that.

Improvisation changed its name to Improvisators and moved to a different channel called STS and the new episodes started coming out last month! Not only that, but the episodes are now in open access on YouTube! This is great news to all of you who have been asking for the whole 40-minute episodes instead of 5-minute clips that I post here (the videos still aren't subbed though :( ).

I'm very excited to translate a clip from their new show format and I can't wait to show it to you!

Hey guys!

Want to learn Russian but don't know where to start? Can't find any motivation to keep learning the language? Don't see any progress in your Russian skills? Want to find actual native speakers to talk to?

This is sort of a promotional post. I'm a teacher at this online academy which is techically a Discord server. We teach Russians English, German, French and many other languages. But we also have Russian classes for foreigners!

We've got:

• Daily intensive classes in groups of 4-6 people;

• Less intensive group classes three days a week;

• Speaking clubs and individual classes;

• Wonderful teachers who are actually passionate about languages;

• Homework that makes learning fun;

• Constant feedback from teachers;

• An AMAZING community;

and so much more!

Right now the classes are avaliable for A0 and A1 only, but studying programs for higher levels are already being developed by our awesome teachers!
